Community Service
Posted by Dan Furie on 2007-03-14

On Saturday February 24, a group of Alpha Sigma Phi-Rockledge brothers and pledges took part in a day of service.  Twelve brothers and pledges were able to help a local non-profit organization, Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services (INHS) in the renovation project of a house in Ithaca.  The INHS specializes in buying out old and dilapidated houses and properties in Ithaca, gutting them, and then renovating them so that they can be used in the future for low-income subsidized housing. The day of service was mediated by On Site Volunteer Services, a student run organization that is separate from Cornell University, but pairs Ithacans (mostly Cornell students) with many local non-profit organizations for possible service opportunities.

Our specific day of service included the finishing touches of the demolition and gutting of an old run-down house off of route 89.  Rockledge brothers completed a variety of tasks including ripping down dry wall and insulation, pulling up floor tiles, shoveling snow paths outside, removing a wood stove, throwing away old building materials, and general clean up.  The house when completely renovated, will eventually house a single family with kids.  The day of service was an overall great experience where pledges and brothers could have fun, hang out, and feel a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.  In the future, Rockledge will stay in contact with On Site Volunteers and hopefully this will allow brothers to continue to help the Ithaca community.

Into the Streets
Posted by Dan Furie on 2006-11-06
A group of eleven brothers this year participated in the 15th annual "Into The Streets" (ITS), a day of service that was organized by the Cornell Public Service Center.  ITS paired our brothers up with the Finger Lakes Land Trust to complete a days work at the Lindsay-Parsons Biodiversity Preserve.  Alpha Sigma Phi brothers helped the preserve by clearing debris off nature trails, picking and removing non-native invasive plants, and reinforcing a dam.  The day of service was not only a great way to connect the brothers of Alpha Sigma Phi to the Ithaca community, but also was a fun experience for all who participated.
